Welcome to Homestead Joys! This homepage is our website's Front Porch. We're glad that you've stopped by. We're here to chat and share about homesteading. Have a cup of coffee or tea, sit for a while, relax, dream, learn... as we enjoy the peacefulness and serenity of the view together. Or, come on inside, we'll help you find what you're looking for...

This website is our way of reaching out and inviting you to join us in this journey!

From the Homestead's Front Porch

As you and I linger on my front porch, surrounded by the beauty of nature, relaxed in peaceful reverie, we become aware of the hum of an older farm tractor, the faithful Massey Ferguson 135, busy cutting hay back near the barn. The fragrance of freshly mown grasses draws us back into the present homestead reality. The gentle lowing of one of the homestead milk cows lets us know that she also smells the newly cut hay.

We've also become aware of activities in the kitchen. The aroma of homemade ketchup simmering on the stove makes our mouths water for juicy hamburgers topped with an array of homemade condiments...

A couple of the younger children come running up the front porch steps with a basket of beautiful blackberries that they've just foraged...

Mmm, yummy! They'll be perfect for a blackberry cobbler, an easy, delicious dessert topped with a simple 3-ingredient Homemade Bisquick topping.
Is your mouth also watering!?

We hear happy cackling of the chickens as one of the children gathers the fresh eggs to bring into the house...

Moments like these are just a few of the many joys of homesteading.

Curious About Homesteading?

Curious about homesteading? Even if you're an urban dweller, you may be surprised at the ways you can also experience some of these homestead joys!

You'd be surprised at how many others surrounded by high rises, or deeply rooted in suburbia, have joined us right where they are! We'll be talking more about this!

Wherever you are, whatever you're able to do, we're here to encourage you. Just begin with small steps... We'll help you. You can do it!

And if you're a veteran homesteader, you're warmly welcomed! We'd love to be able to hear about your experiences, high points, low points, and lessons learned...

You'll have opportunity to contribute on various pages here. We're all in this to share, support, and encourage one another as we experience homesteading from different backgrounds and vantage points.

What is a Homestead?

The word "homestead" may invoke memories of a simpler lifestyle of long ago, of a family farm remotely tucked away, self-sufficient, freely flourishing on the land...

Today, in many ways, "homesteading" has become defined less by where one lives, such as the city, the country, or off-grid, but rather how they live, by implementing independent, self-reliant, and self-sustaining lifestyle choices in whatever degree one is able.

Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.
Success is a journey, not a destination..

Some might say that homesteading is counterculture and perhaps it is, depending on one's cultural standard. But to those who came before us, it was simply a common way of life.

Living The Homestead Lifestyle Wherever You Are

Basically, modern homesteading encompasses a wide range of what some may call "alternative lifestyles". It is a strong desire to regain the ways of living and self-sustaining skills that have been increasingly lost over the past decades, through dependence on, and trust in, others for everything that sustains us.

The amazing spectrum of life skills that were common to those who came before us are beckoning us to reembrace them and, in whatever way we can, to weave them back into our daily lives, changing our lives for the better.

This may include things like learning to cook and bake from scratch, preserving foods, or learning to safely forage for wild edible and medicinal plants that grow freely around us.

Perhaps sewing, knitting or crocheting, or creating our own healthy homemade skincare products like lotions, soaps, shampoo, homemade deodorants, and salves are skills you'd be interested in learning...

The modern homesteading lifestyle is evidence re-emergencing independence and self-sustainability. It's marked by simple principles such as growing and raising our own food, learning to make things that we commonly use, providing a simpler lifestyle...

It may also provide more quality family time, involving our children in a healthier active, enjoyable, lifestyle which include chores and life lessons, away from their captivating devices. Homeschooling fits perfectly in the homesteading lifestyle.

It may include building strong ties with our local community, helping one another in our endeavors as we strive for a better life for us, our children, and our grandchildren.

Freedom In Homesteading

Time changes things. Many of us have changed as well. Some of us may be seeking independence from things we previously depended on. We may be feeling a necessity to avoid commercial food additives, or we may need to live a more frugal and self-reliant lifestyle. Perhaps we are awakening to the need for freedom in areas in our lives that we had previously taken for granted.

In a world where many have felt a tightening grip of external controls, the homestead lifestyle can be a way of reclaiming some of the freedoms that we thought we had. Whether in an urban, suburban, rural, or off-grid setting, there are many ways to experience the different aspects of homesteading!

In the words of someone who has experienced homestead joys, "Homesteading is taking any step that breaks the chains of the different systems that hold us back from the freedom we want." Source
